Recently there is an article written by WatchTime (The American Watch Magazine) on the history of Seiko. It gives you an insight on how it's owner Kintaro Hattori set up its Seikosha watch factory in year 1892, producing Seikosha Timekeeper (pocket watch series), Laurel (wrist watches in 1924), Seiko Marvel (wrist watch in year 1956), Grand Seiko (in 1960), and many more.
In 1970s, Seiko came up with this model : SEIKO 5 DAY-DATE Automatic Watch. The name Seiko 5 is said to include 5 factors, and they are :
5) Water Resistant
It has captured mass market especially in Asia where watches became affordable to many people. Till today, these watches are still available, and has become vintage, though some may no longer be water resistant.
